We took our first family Christmas trip into NYC on Saturday, and Fidget had a great time. We did a little shopping for last minute gifts, then headed over to Rockefeller Center to see the tree. Mom and Dad were a little disappointed, as this year's tree looks like it has weathered a few hurricanes, and a lumberjack or two, all quite recently. Not quite a Charlie Brown reject, but it's awful close. We still took some pictures with Fidget and joined the crowd milling about and checked out the ice rink and a few stores.
We headed away from Rockefeller, had lunch and then walked up to Central Park. In a city of several million and plenty of tourists on any given day, we managed to run into two families from CT that are in playgroups and classes with Fidget that we never see around town. We got to Central Park and played on the swings for a little bit, with the Time Warner center towering in the background. There was a spongy play area a little like astroturf that we put Fidget down to let her run a little. She couldn't walk! The surface was too bouncy for her, so she kept falling after just one or two steps.
From the Park we headed back over toward Fifth Avenue to check out the store windows and look for mittens for poor Fidget's hands - it was a little colder than Mom & Dad expected. Fidget fell asleep by the time we made it to the first windows, so we walked along the sidewalk with everyone else looking at the windows for a few blocks, and then made a run for the car to head back to CT.
Sunday we went to our church's annual Christmas brass concert. It's a shabby event that only manages to get 10 members of the NY Philharmonic brass section to play for a few hours and amaze and fill everyone with a little Christmas spirit. As I said to Kd, I'm not sure what the church music director did in his previous life, but he's got a LOT of talented friends who come play music at our church when he asks. The concert was wonderful, and as our minister said it does for so many people, really did make it feel like the first day of the Christmas season. Fidget, of course, had to attend since Mom & Dad went, even though it was a little late in the evening for her.
Fidget enjoyed the concert very much, and she made this clear to everyone around her. As you know from previous posts, Fidget claps like a lemming heading over a cliff when she hears others doing so. This being a late evening concert, Mom & Dad thought (wrongly, of course) that Fidget might doze off with the music and sleep through most of the concert. NOPE! The audience at the concert would clap after each piece, so Fidget would be calm, resting against Mom's shoulder, then hear the clapping, raise her head right up and look around, and then start to clap her little hands together. We did this routine 20 times - once after every piece the brass orchestra played. Fidget was otherwise very good - she only commented on the concert once right at the end. Cheerios did help us get through the last couple pieces...so, now we're ready for Christmas!
